Benefits of Collagen Powder and Collagen Protein

Hey, guys, Dr. Axe here, doctor of natural medicine and founder of DrAxe.com. In this video, I want to share with you the many benefits of collagen powder and collagen protein. It’s a hot thing on the market today. It’s something that I supplement with every day. I have my patients supplement with it, even my own wife, my mom, my family. And I believe that collagen is something that’s missing in almost everybody’s diet today. I’ll also show you my favorite brand of collagen. It’s the one that I use on a regular basis as well, and talk to you about the six to seven main benefits. And also, how you should be using it and how much you should be getting on a regular basis.

So let’s get started here. Number one, collagen benefits your joints. It benefits joints health. This is my favorite brand. It’s called Dr. Collagen. It’s a great supplement here, collagen joint support. But the reason why collagen is so beneficial for your joints is that collagen contains specifically proline, which is an amino acid that helps with connective tissue repair. So we need more proline in our diets.

Collagen helps your body get more proline which is one of the reasons it’s so beneficial. Another thing here is collagen supports your gut health. Collagen has L-glutamine in it. L-glutamine is an amino acid that helps your gut lining. It’s used for fuel for your small intestine. So collagen is beneficial for your gut and your gut lining. And it can help support healthy digestive function. The other thing here that’s great about collagen is that it contains proline and glycine, which actually can help support healthy skin, hair, and nails. Remember, proline is used for tissues within your body. For a lot of us, we are so deficient in collagen in our diet.

Did you know that eating meat products does not contain collagen, vegetables, fruits? None of these contain the amino acids proline which we have to have to have healthy skin, hair, and nails, and glowing radiant skin. Also for collagen, it’s great for metabolism. One serving or one scoop of collagen has about 20 grams of highly absorbable protein. We know protein really supports the body’s metabolism and having healthy, lean tissues within the body including healthy muscular tissue. So again, if we really want to support the body’s metabolism, getting more protein or collagen protein can definitely help with that.

Also, collagen powder may support the body in detoxification because of the amino acid glycine. Glycine supports healthy liver function as many medical studies have shown. And then also, we know that collagen may support a healthy immune system function. The reason for that being is we know that collagen is packed with glutamine which supports the gut. Well, 80% of your immune system lives in your gut. So if you want to support immunity, you’ve got to support the gut with amino acids such as glutamine, proline, and glycine. And here’s another thing I want to mention. When you’re buying a collagen supplement or a collagen protein, you want to look for the types of collagen that are found in there. You’ll notice that this type which is why this is the brand that I use. I put it in a smoothie this morning. It has type I, II, III, V, and X. It has five different types of collagen. If you go out there and just buy collagen from another brand, typically, they only contain type I and type III collagen which comes from beef broth.

Now beef broth that can be good for your skin, your hair, your nails, and your bones. But it doesn’t have type II collagen and V and X, which are good for your gut, and your joints, and other areas in your body. But your gut and your joints and other areas. So you want to find a collagen that has multiple types of collagen in it like again, this brand Dr. Collagen does. So again, getting more collagen in your diet can support healthy joints. It can support a healthy inflammation response in the body. Think about how many health issues today are caused by inflammation. It can support your gut health, your skin, hair, and nails, your detoxification, your immunity. All of those things are supported by getting collagen in your diet on a daily basis. And I’d recommend doing between one and three, ideally three servings of collagen in your diet. And I simply add one to two scoops to a smoothie every single day.

I want to give you one other product that contains collagen, and it’s bone broth powder. Drinking bone broth is your highest source of collagen. Whether it’s beef collagen which is high in type I and type III collagen, or chicken collagen or chicken soup which is high in type II collagen. But also you can get it in powder form. This is another brand that I really like. It’s called Ancient Nutrition and it’s bone broth powder. So bone broth protein powder. This contains high levels of type II collagen. This is the other thing. I add this to my smoothie every day. They have flavors such as chocolate, vanilla.

They also have a turmeric and a pure. But again, if you really want to support your body, you’ve got to follow a collagen diet and get more collagen in your diet on a regular basis. The best supplement sources are going to be a bone broth protein powder from companies like Ancient Nutrition. You can simply order this on Amazon.com or Dr. Collagen is another great brand. But again, get more collagen to support your immunity, support healthy inflammation response, support beauty, skin, hair and nails, your gut health, a whole lot more. And by the way, if you want to learn more about collagen and bone broth, you can also do a Google search. I just wrote articles on these. Look up “Dr. Axe collagen” or “Dr. Axe bone broth” and you’ll find some things there as well. Hey, guys, this has been Dr. Axe talking about the benefits of collagen, bone broth.
