Hi guys, Dr. Axe here. Today I want to talk to you about a superfood called spirulina and other superfood algae. When we here things like algae and seaweed, we don’t lick our lips. We don’t start saying, “Mm,” that’s sounds delicious most of the time and part of it is, its texture, part of it its green. I do want to say it’s one of the most powerful superfoods you could ever eat. If you can get it in your diet somehow, I’m going to suggest you do so, and I’ll talk about the easiest way to get superfoods like Spirulina in your diet here at the very end. First I want to quote a medical journal, it’s actually the journal of Chemosphere and they actually found that people who are exposed to radiation, when they were consuming algae like chlorella and spirulina, they had lower radiation damages.

They actually found that algae and seaweeds can actually heal your body from radiation damage, which is incredible, again journal of Chemosphere. Also for years, people have realized things like seaweed and by the way, this is a lot more popular in places like Okinawa, Japan and a lot of islands. Seaweeds are actually natural immune boosters, they can be high in things like GLA which is a type of fatty acid. Spirulina is actually known as the superfood of the future containing about 70% protein. Also, it may contain traces of vitamin B12 which is pretty amazing as well for something being not an animal source of B12, which is pretty awesome. Again, if you can get some of these superfoods like spirulina and chlorella in your diet, they are amazing superfoods.

There are three main types of algae people consume, actually there are several. One is green, you also have red algae and blue-green and then you have brown algae. Blue-green algae, you will find things here again, this is chlorella which is kind of the sister to spirulina and this is what we talked about earlier with the Journal of Chemosphere. You can just get it plain like this or the way that most of the time I consume my superfoods or my algae, is in this something like Perfect Food powder. This is by Garden of Life, this is the one I personally take every single morning when I wake up. You’ll see things here like spirulina and chlorella in raw algae, they’re both in here. You get all those algae but that’s in a Perfect Food powder. Or you can go to some place, like a local health food store, sometimes they will have, this is pure spirulina and you can actually use this in baking.

We’ve been actually testing and trying some things out here, the whole DrAxe.com team and we’ve been looking at making actually some spirulina like bread and some things. Making some superfoods by using some of these ingredients. Also I want to let you know there are some amazing weight loss benefits by consuming algae and specifically brown algae. There is a nutrient call Fuconthin or actually Fucoxanthin that is found in brown algae. And a recent medical study was done, it was actually published in PubMed and they found that people that were consuming about a teaspoon a day of some form of algae, specifically brown algae, they found they lost an average of 16 pounds over an 11 week period of time.

Again, they were losing about 15 pounds over about a 10 week period of time by consuming algae. Again, there are a lot of benefits here metabolically. Also, if you have more of an acidic diet, if you eat a lot of processed meats and things, then this can help alkalize your system internally. Also, if you’re low in iodine and looking up to build up a healthy thyroid, it has really good levels of iron and also good levels of iodine which you need. But again, a few of my favorite things about spirulina and chlorella in algaes, is that they protect your body, they help you detox. It’s another good form of fiber and you’ll notice, if you start consuming algae, you’ll notice you’ll have more regular and healthier bowel movements. Another thing you’ll notice is it does help boost your immune system, alkalize your system. It’s kind of like a natural energy booster.

A lot of people know wheat grass for that. But spirulina, chlorella or doing a superfood powder is a great way to do that. One of the things you can do, you can either do something like this or just your spirulina, you can mix it in water and drink it down. Or you can mix it with a berry smoothie anywhere from a teaspoon to a full scoop. I can tell you, I know there is a lot of coffee drinkers out there, but when I do my smoothie in the morning with blueberries, some coconut milk, I throw in some spinach and some Perfect Food powder, I feel awesome.

Again, get some algae in your diet. You don’t have to eat the seaweed salad or something like that. But add a little scoop in to a smoothie that you eat every day and you’re going to notice some tremendous health benefits.
